So sad today
I found out last night that one of my cousins died over the weekend.
He was a second cousin (my dad's cousin), and was older than me by at least 10 years (possibly more). His sister is still my favorite cousin ever.
The saddest thing is...I didn't even know that he was sick. He'd moved to Arizona, and we really didn't see much of him except at funerals. And when I moved here to TN, I instantly became out of the loop of family stuff. (Hence the fact that he died on Saturday and I only found out last night.)
His name was Joe, and he had a wicked sense of humor. I don't ever remember him without a smile and a gleam in his eye. He was fun and fun-loving. He was also kind of the "bad kid" of the family when he was younger.
His 85 year old mother, one of my favorite aunts, is devastated. She is so frail, and has already lost her husband, her best friend and now her son. I hope she makes it through this...
Apparently, Joe had pancreatic cancer. He had beaten it before, had a relapse recently, and thought he had beaten it again. Ironically, his wife was in the hospital for an operation. She sent him home on Friday (I think, I was in shock when my sister was telling me this last night), because if you've ever spent the night in a hospital as a guest, that's why. When she couldn't reach him by phone the next day, I think she sent over a friend and he was found. Died in his sleep. (That, at least, is a blessing.)
I feel so bad for my Aunt Rose. I wish I was in Florida right now. I feel so disconnected from my family and I hate it so much.
I'm going to go cry now.
