So I was perusing my favorite blog this morning and nearly spit coffee all over my monitor.

It seems that someone left their cat in his carrier on the streets of New York and walked away.

I am owned by three cats myself, so I cannot imagine doing that.

Anyone on the f-list who lives in NY and can help out a beautiful orange cat in need, please contact Sars at sars at tomatonation dot com.

Thanks.

Oh, dear. But you know? I can't condemn that person as stridently as the writer of the blog did. I mean, yes, it is a terrible thing to do, but consider the 100s, 1000s?, of animals abandoned in NY - everywhere - every year. Disposable pets that are left behind when the family moves back to the city from their summer cottage on the beach, where they thought it would be nice for the kids to have a puppy or kitty. (I know about these soulless pieces of sh*t as I lived - still live - in a "vacation destination" location.) Or people who can't cope, or lose interest, or whatever their sorry-ass excuse is. A lot of those animals are just tossed, or left, to fend for themselves. Whoever left this cat, cared enough to leave it in a carrier on a sidewalk. It was noticed, very quickly, no doubt. And, as the leaver probably was counting on, it was picked up and cared for. It was, in a way, provided for. Compare that to the cats that just get driven into a strange neighborhood far from home and tossed out of the car.

No, the person who abandoned their baby, left him where he would be found and - the former owner was probably counting on - cared for. Sure, taking him to a shelter might have made more sense, but then the kitty might not have gotten the care that the blog-writer gave him, as funds for shelters are scant. Had they just tossed the kitty in an alley, who would have noticed? Who would have cared?

I used to work for a vet, and I remember him saying that he felt that people who killed new-born kittens were better than those who abandoned them, because they were taking a (modicum) of responsibility for the animals. The animals wouldn't suffer from disease or starvation, or deplete the local bird population, or reproduce, or carry disease. Better, of course, to neuter the mother to begin with, but at least some responsibility was being taken. I think that the former owner of the orange cat did care, and for whatever reason, couldn't come up with a better solution.

But I tend to be an optimist.

I hope the kitty finds a loving home, as I'm thinking he's used to one.

I understand what you're saying. However I can understand the outrage because, even though he was in a carrier, apparently it was without food or water.

What if no one had taken him? What if everyone on that day had decided that "it's not my problem"? Bah, I cannot understand taking a beloved pet and simply abandoning it. There is no reason good enough for that. Especially since NYC has one of the BEST and most well-publicized ASPCA shelters in the world.

I guess I'm too judgmental. I cannot imagine abandoning an animal.
