I'm doing my stream-of-consciousness recapping of The Amazing Race by popular demand. Okay, okay, it's because my sister asked me to.
In the previouslies:
It's so nice to see Jennifer and Preston eliminated again. And then...uh-oh. In all the racers' interview clips that are shown, every one is singing the praises of the Amazing Luke. I really hope this doesn't become an ongoing theme or I'm going to be wishing for Luke and his mom to be eliminated sooner rather than later.
OMG the producers said they were going to make a point to show more scenic scenes and they did not disappoint. The Alps are gorgeous. And on the subject of gorgeousness, can I just say how hot Phil looks right now?
Luke and his mom rip the clue and they are going to Munich, Germany. Oh, and when Luke was growing up he was called names and misunderstood by people. Well, I was bullied for six years in a row, called names and misunderstood by people. It's called childhood, so shut it, you.
Tammy and Victor borrow their cabbie's cell phone to call for airline reservations. He thinks of himself as the team "leader" since he's the older brother. O-kay.
Mark and Michael are very confident. "We made up half a minute in time because we ran." hee.
Mel and Mike-Mel injured his groin on the last episode during the cheese humping task. His comment? "Gotta keep limpin' around the world." Awesome.
Can I just say how cute Amanda and Kris are in the taxi? "This trip is intense" she says. "It's sweet that we're doing it together" he replies. Aww.
Brad and Victoria are "trying to play it smart" whatever that means.
Jen interviews that LaKisha still sees her in the "little sister world" and her playing "big sister role" is "pissing me off". Well, missy, she IS your big sister, right? If it's bugging you that much, tell her to cut that shit out. I hate it when team members just stew in their own bitter juice instead of just speaking out. This cannot lead to anything good.
Steve and Linda rip the clue and look for a cab in the rain. He voice overs that they will have to do things differently today. Well, we'll see once things start getting all stressful again, won't we, Mr. "You've got to move faster"? Steve did earn a few points for the interview apology/breakdown to Linda about the way he treated her in the first leg of the race. I'll be watching to see if he really means it by the way he treats her in Leg 2. Linda comments that since they're going to Germany, she hopes there's a beer challenge. Hee. You and everyone else, sweets.
Nearly everyone is booking the air flights by telephone. Thanks, friendly cab drivers!
One thing it is so nice to hear from the racers is all the "pleases" and "thank yous" to the locals. I hope it continues into the later legs after Killer Fatigue (TM-TWOP) has set in.
Neither Luke and Margie nor Mark and Michael tried to reserve tickets by phone. While Luke and Margie luck out and get on the first flight, Mark and Michael and Jodi and Christie (who tried to book by phone and failed) have to fly on the second flight out. Hang on a sec, Luke's amazing brain did not think of reserving by cell phone? Is it because he's deaf that he never thought of it...because, he wouldn't use a cell phone? But, he is aware of cell phones, right? RIGHT? (Yes, that is how friggin' sick I am already of the whole "insert-disability-of-your-choice-here can do anything anyone else can do.) *eye roll*
Wow, they get to drive on the Autobahn. I would love to try that one day. All except for Kisha and Jennifer who are taking a leisurely auto tour of Munich.
Teams begin arriving at the Road Block destination, which is in Ruhpolding, Germany. They ride a cable car to the top of the mountain and the task is that one person has to tandem paraglide off of the 6000 foot high mountain top. (And can I just say, that Phil looks particularly yummy in leather? *swoon*)
So, for the paragliding, it's Tammy (Victor is so jealous), Cara, Margie, Kris (Amanda-"I'm afraid of heights, you'll have to do it"-wait, what?) & Mel (I'm old, so I have to do some of the fun challenges--hee, hee, I love him). One of the down sides to the paragliding is the wind cannot be too high or they cannot go. The teams can either wait for the wind to die down or they can walk down the mountain on a marked trail that will take an hour to hike. As soon as she is told she will have to wait, Tammy decides she's walking. She takes off the gear and starts down the mountain.
Victoria and Brad arrive next and Victoria decides almost immediately that she's walking down. She doesn't think it would be prudent to have to wait for perfect wind conditions, especially since she'd be fifth to go. Once she takes off walking, Cara, Margie and Kris all take off too. During this bit, there is an interview with Luke who says how much he admires the redheads that they are so nice, etc. (And they have nice breasts, too. What? You know that's what he's thinking.)
Linda and Steve, Mark and Michael and Jennifer and Kisha all arrive at the mountaintop and even though Mel tries to psych them out by saying "Don't be afraid!" they all opt to run down the mountain rather than wait for the wind. Mel is left standing alone at the top thinking he's just lost it for his team because "the hike would kill him". (Personally, I think it's a trick by the Amazing Editors. We'll see.)
Then, Mel does the most surprising thing I've ever seen in all the years I've been watching TAR. He actually says: "I can't pray for divine intervention. God has enough to do...I can only be thankful for what I'm seeing..." wait--WHAT? You mean that the Almighty has better things to do than decide who is going to win a reality show? This is a first in TAR history, since most of the prayers we've seen in the past have been to plead for God's help with some task or other. And perhaps, God was grateful for the humility of Mel, because the wind suddenly died down enough for Mel to make the leap of faith off the cliff. (I knew the editors were trying to make me all worried before. Naughty editors.)
First to finish the task was Tammy. Then Margie, Kris & Victoria. And then Mel glided to a fifth place finish "I could stay up here all day--if I had a sandwich" Hee.
Oh, crap. Linda missed the marker and went the wrong way down the mountain. Cara, Mark, Jen & Christie all went the right way...wtf was Linda doing carrying all the stuff? Shouldn't Steve have had that crap with him so she didn't have anything to worry about except seeing the path markers?
Phil the gorgeous, still in leather (rowr) introduces this week's Detour: Balancing Dolly or Austrian Folly.
In Balancing Dolly-teams ride a Segway transporter along a two mile obstacle course. Riding one takes balance and skill but it can be done quickly if you can master the controls.
In Austrian Folly-teams have to throw Austrian Pie (which looks like cake to me, but what do I know?) at a "target" until they find one with cherry filling. The twist is that the target is your team mate's face. Hee and EW.
These tasks are a combination of "Tortoise and Hare" and "Needle in a Haystack" I think.
The sibling lawyers chose Folly, finish very quickly and receive their next clue.
Meanwhile, back at the mountain--here comes Mark, Cara, Jen and Christie. Linda is lost and upset. "He's gonna hate me now...I wish I wouldn't have walked down the mountain..." which I can understand the second comment so much. She thought she was going to have an adventure in paragliding when she volunteered to do the Road Block. I feel really sorry for her because she was sort of peer-pressured into walking down when all the other teams took off. If she had felt better about how Steve might have reacted, she probably would have stayed and hung out with Mel to wait out the wind. So, anyway, she flags down a nice Austrian lady who gives her a lift back to the mountain...where she gets dropped off, it looks like the cable car station. The show doesn't really make it clear if she is reunited with Steve there or if she has to do the task over. (There are penalties for not completing tasks in the way they are described which is why I was wondering.) Since she already walked down the entire mountain, would she really have to do it again? The show does not say, which is a bit frustrating for me. Anyway she is reunited with Steve and in the car thanks him for not being angry.
Back to the lawyers who find the woodcutter and get the okay to go to the Pit Stop at Schloss Hellbrunn in Salzburg, Austria where Phil tells them how ridiculous they look and gives them a "hybrid go cart" as the winner of that leg. My mad Googling skilz found this site, which if so, then wow, quite a little toy.
Amanda and Kris also choose the Folly and much pie/cake throwing hilarity ensues. They are also critiquing the cake/pie taste as they go, which is cute. And Kris' comments "it's like really bad hair gel" and "It's 'Something About Mary' times ten" were funny.
Mel and Mark arrive and choose the Dolly option.
Luke and Margie arrive and Luke wants to do the Dolly but Margie wants to do cake. Luke shrugs and says "She's my mom" as if that explains it. I think she didn't think she could handle the Segway, so the pie throwing was easier for her. And, as the karma of the show usually goes, it takes them for-freaking-ever to find the cherry filling. The locals were really mocking them by the end there, it seems.
Brad and Victoria choose the pie/cake and get finished seemingly right away. Kisha and Jen are lost again and Jen is muttering about how Kisha always thinks she's right because she's the older sister (what's wrong with that? *smirk*) and Jen is sick of it. Blah, blah, blah. Either (wo)man up and tell her what you think or STFU.
Okay, I have to give Steve credit where credit is due. He did not berate Linda AT ALL. Instead, he told her to sit there and relax and look pretty. The Amazing Editors strike again with a split screen showing Linda's reaction with a cake decorated with a smiley face.
Cara and Jamie and Mark and Michael do the Segway.
Mel and Mike get to the castle and find the wrong entrance, they can see the mat, the greeter and Phil, but the gate is locked. Mike makes a show of trying to climb it and Phil pulls off an epic eyebrow pop. Someone unlocks the gate for them and they are checked in as Team #2.
Amanda and Kris are #3.
Margie and Luke are #4 (Phil signed it to them again. How much awesome does that man possess?)
Brad and Victoria are #5.
Christie and Jodi do the Folly. And a caption comes on the screen which states "14 Hours since start" wow, that's new.
Jamie and Cara are checked in as team #6.
Linda and Steve do the pie while Christi and Jodi take a night-time tour of the village while looking for the woodcutters. They find a barn with a horse and grab a piece of wood and sheesh. Maybe because it's dark? I don't know.
Meanwhile, Steve continues on his road to redemption and I find myself rooting for them a little bit. Especially since the blondes are so whiny and lost. Eventually both teams find the correct woodcutting place ("I've never felt so much like a dumb blonde in my life") and take off for the Pit Stop.
Jen and Kisha are team #7 and Jen interviews that she can't believe the Race has turned into the "most frustrating of my life." And that she "can't even listen to (Kisha) talk without it being annoying." Wow. It's a bit early in the race for this kind of thing...and it does not bode well for this team.
Mark and Michael are happy to be team #8.
Then the crazy camera racing up to Phil and it's...Christie and Jodi as team #9...last again! Phil needles them about staying in by the skin of their teeth and they acknowledge that they are living on the edge.
Steve and Linda land on the mat and are Philiminated. Aww. They cry and embrace. "Having him makes me happy." *snif*
