1. Current obsession (not fandom obsession)?
I would have to say Regency romances. I started reading historical romances when I was still in high school (1972)--back when the titles were "The Flame and the Flower" and "The Wolf and the Dove" when the heroes were rape-y and the heroines fell in love with them anyway. Seriously, my classmates and I called them "trashy novels" and those two started it all. I read romance novels for years, watching them evolve into the fun frolics they are today. I stopped reading them for a while when I started writing romance. I guess I thought I might be influenced in my own writing. When I found Smart Bitches, Trashy Books a few years ago, I read the website with longing...and realized I was missing my romance fix. I love anything by Georgette Heyer and Laura Kinsale. My current favorite is Caroline Linden.
2. What's your favorite dish to make?
If I have to pick just one I'd have to say it's my Shepherd's Pie. I make it often for guests and it always gets raves. I make it in individual ramekins which is a lovely presentation. I use beef & sausage, peas & carrots, homemade gravy flavored with Bisto Gravy Granules for extra flavor. Topped with mashed potatoes or puff pastry and served with crescent rolls--it never fails me.
3. How did you get involved in fandom?
I can't tell that story without explaining how I came to read the Harry Potter books. I have always been a reader ever since I was a kid. I tried to instill a love of reading in my own kids when they were younger. Well, my daughter took to it, but for various reasons (including a couple of learning disorders) my son never wanted to read. Well, one day in a bookstore, he brought me a copy of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and asked me to buy it for him. I had bought many books for him that wound up under his bed, unread. He wanted the hardcover edition and I made a deal with him. I said: I'll buy you the paperback first (book 3 had just come out) and if you read it and then prove to me you did by telling me about it, I'll buy you the hardcover and all the others too as they come out. Well, he did and I did. I read them too, and started looking online for other fans. I found the Diagon Alley (www.diagonally.org) website and was introduced to fan fiction. I was directed to The Restricted Section which is where I posted my first few forays into fanfic writing. (Oh the Mary Sue...my first fanfic is called "Detention". So very original! LOL!) I eventually discovered HP fandom on LJ, the
sshg_exchange and various other exchanges and the rest is history.
4. What's your favorite thing about fandom? Least favorite?
My favorite thing about fandom is all the fantastic people I've met online and in person. I have so many friends from all over the world because of HP fandom. The fanfic isn't bad, either (most of the time!). My least favorite thing would have to be the "HP promotes witchcraft" crazies and all the wank that goes along with such a large and diverse community.
5. What's the craziest thing you've ever done?
I would have to say marrying a man I met online. I met him in November 1999, way before the birth of any online dating services. We met by chance in the old SciFi.com chatroom called Dominion. He lived in Tennessee and I lived in Florida. We started talking online every night then talking on the phone several times per week. We finally met face to face in May 2000. We got married in Las Vegas on October 21, 2000--only 11 months after we met. We just celebrated our tenth wedding anniversary and I think we love each other more every day. He's my best friend, my soulmate, my everything. I adore him. :)
