Well, that was one of the worst Januaries I've ever lived through and I'm glad it's over.
Yesterday I had my quarterly doctor's visit and I have lost 7 pounds since November. He was very proud of me for losing weight during the holidays. I'm happy too, since I have been doing the whole "eat more protein" thing since the beginning of the year--and it's helped. So, go me.
I have a mammogram and an electrocardiogram scheduled for February. The electrocardiogram is just a precaution. I've had a heart murmur for years and recently I've had palpitations that have bothered me enough to mention to him, so he went ahead and scheduled it. (Better than a stress test, any day.)
I read Naomi Novik's Uprooted last week and I can't recommend it enough. I loved the strong female lead and the world-building in the book. I loved the magic and the hero reminded me a bit of Snape. Aside from being a snappy dresser, that is. The book is so good, I want to read it again right away in order to pick up all the bits I missed the first time around.
Which reminds me, I need to get her Temeraire series again...I read books 1-4 then traded them away on Paperback Swap and now I regret it. They are all still 7.99 in e-book format, which seems high to me for books that have been out so long. I loved the books, although by number 4, if I'm remembering right, I was getting a bit upset about how ill-used and unappreciated Will Lawrence and Temeraire had become. But it's up to eight books now, so I might go ahead and give it another try.
I also read Once Upon a Marquess by Courtney Milan. She is one of my very favorite authors in the romance genre--or any genre, to be honest. Her heroines are smart, self-sufficient and strong. Her heroes are not too dumb to live and usually learn a lot during the story. And her stories are full of humor which I love. Her historicals are an auto-buy for me.
Last Saturday, we had five inches of snow on the ground. Today it was close to 60 degrees and we had the windows open. I hate the weather in this state, I swear.
We took our Christmas tree and decorations down today. We did leave up one string of lights around the inside front windows because they make us smile. :)
I had dinner on Thursday night with all the women (except two--one is on maternity leave, the other lives in Jacksonville, FL and works at the same company there) who were in the same training class as me and started ten years ago today. We went to a restaurant and celebrated making it for ten years. It was lots of fun. Many of us try to have dinner together a few times a year anyway, but this was the first time we had all managed to get out together in ages. (We all spent nine months in a training room together. Friends were made.) There were pledges to try to go out once per month, but I don't think all of us will make it again until one of our number retires in April. *sigh* Of course it's one of the two women I'm the closest to. I'll think about it tomorrow.
We bought the entire series of Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes and received the package on Thursday. We watched disc 1 last night and it was delightful. Brett is the penultimate Holmes, in my opinion. Can't wait to watch the next one.
Guess that's it for now.

If Brett is the penultimate Holmes, who is the ultimate Holmes? 8-)
